Commercial Demolition cleanup

Posted: December 12, 2022

Lawrence County has had many dilapidated, abandoned, and blighted properties. The Ohio Department of Development has provided a program that we, the Land Bank, are participating in to clean up in a strategic or community-impacted area.  Demolition will help to stabilize neighborhoods and property values with our main goal to create potential reuse opportunities.

The Land Bank is Happy to Announce we are coming close to the end of our Residential Demolition portion of the Ohio Department of Development Program.  Southern 52 Excavating, Inc., and Pinkerman Excavating & Construction, LLC’s have shown true professionalism. Both contractors are truly dedicated to their scope of work. The demolitions will be completed on schedule. The Land Bank has demolished 16 abandoned, blighted, dilapidated, and condemned properties. The land Bank had ten residential demolitions. Two of the ten properties had two structures.  The Land Bank has also demolished 6 condemned and nuisance properties on behalf of the City of Ironton.

The Land Bank is very excited to move forward with our Commercial Demolition cleanup of the ODOD program. The Lombard School.  Originally constructed in the mid 1900’s and used as a city school for Ironton, Ohio, this structure saw decades of public use followed by extended non-use and lack of maintenance. Years after ceasing all operations as a city school, efforts were later made to retrofit the location for repurposing as the County’s Open-Door school for the disabled.  However, some ideal improvements were met with structural, environmental, and economic challenges for that long-term use.  Although the structure did serve for a time, the design as a three-story provided a barrier and was problematic for disabled attendees. Ultimately, the attendees had to relocate, leaving the structure again unoccupied and without future plan for use. Now additional years of unoccupancy; known health and environmental concerns; cost of ineffective potential for rehabilitation; and coupled by aging and dilapidated housing stock.  The County sees a far more beneficial and productive use for the land’s redevelopment.  The Land Bank is happy to participate in the cleanup on behalf of the County Commissioners.

The Land Bank-approved contractors Southern 52 Excavating, Inc. and Pinkerman Excavating & Hauling, LLC. have been working hard to remove the residential blight in Lawrence County.
